How long does a small tattoo take to heal?
A small piece on the wrist, finger or behind the ear takes two to three weeks to surface-heal. The epidermis regenerates in about that time, so the skin stops looking raw, even though the ink is still settling into the dermis beneath it. Colours can look dull for two to three months before they return to normal.

Ink does not stay exactly where it is placed. A small amount spreads into surrounding skin during healing, thick lines soften and fine lines blur, which is why very fine-line tattoos need a touch-up. A tattoo that looks slightly faded at month three is usually normal settling, not a failed job; full colour typically looks like its reference again by month six.
What aftercare speeds up healing?
Wash twice daily with lukewarm water and unscented soap, keep it moisturised with a thin layer of ointment, and leave film and scabs alone. Avoid swimming, saunas and tanning while it heals, and do not apply sunscreen over a fresh tattoo for the first two weeks. The most common cause of a slow or patchy heal is repeatedly wetting and drying the area.
