Fine line tattoo
A style in depth: the rules that define it, how durable it is and how to plan one.
A fine line tattoo is drawn with very thin strokes, typically 0.5 to 0.8 mm, to fit detailed subjects into a small area. The trade-off is durability: ink spreads during healing, so thin strokes soften within one to two years and usually need at least one touch-up.

Size guide
Minimum 6 cm for a detailed subject. Sweet spot 10–20 cm on forearm, calf or thigh. Hand and finger fine line: expect heavy fading.
How thin is too thin for a fine line tattoo?
Below about 0.6 mm the stroke spreads until the gap between lines closes, and the design reads as grey shading rather than separate lines. Above 0.8 mm it stops looking delicate and starts competing with standard line work. The practical range is 0.6 to 0.8 mm, and it is worth asking your artist what they actually tattoo in.
How many touch-ups does a fine line tattoo need?
Usually one within the first year for a small piece, and sometimes two for very detailed work. This is normal rather than a mistake: the line you see on day one is ink sitting on top of the skin, while the line you see at month six is ink that has settled into the dermis. Ask before you book whether touch-ups are included, because many artists include one.
Where do fine line tattoos hold up best?
On the forearm, calf, upper arm and thigh, where skin is thick and movement is limited. Avoid fingers, hands, the inner wrist and the ribs: thin skin plus constant movement plus sun exposure makes fine lines blur fastest in exactly those places people most often want them small.
