Small tattoo
A style in depth: the rules that define it, how durable it is and how to plan one.
A small tattoo is any design under about 5 cm. The size limit is set by physics rather than taste: ink spreads during healing, so a small design loses a higher percentage of its line definition than a large one, and detail has to be removed rather than merely scaled down.

Size guide
Single motif 2–4 cm. Text 1.5–3 cm tall. Finger tattoos 1–2 cm. Row of small motifs: 1.5–2 cm each with gaps.
What is a good size for a small tattoo?
2 to 4 cm for a single motif, which stays a clear silhouette at that scale. Between 1 and 2 cm only a single bold line or a solid shape works. Under 1 cm, healing closes the gaps and you should choose a solid shape with no interior detail, or a row of dots instead.
- 5 cm and up: room for interior detail
- 2–4 cm: single silhouette or one line
- 1–2 cm: bold solid shape only
- Under 1 cm: solid, no gaps
Which small tattoo placements fade fastest?
Fingers, hands, the inner wrist and the ankles. All four combine thin skin with frequent friction and washing, and all four are exposed to more sun than a covered forearm. A solid 2 cm shape on an ankle will hold noticeably better than a fine-line 2 cm shape on a finger.
