What a tattoo actually costs
Hourly versus flat pricing, why size drives cost, and the four warning signs of a too-cheap quote.

How are tattoos priced?
Two models dominate. Hourly rate charges by time in the chair, typically for anything that runs over about two hours, so cost scales with detail and size. Flat piece price charges one amount for a defined design, usually for small work under two hours. Ask which model the artist uses before you book, because it changes how much adding an element actually costs you.

Tattoo cost tracks time, and time tracks skin area plus detail density. Doubling a design does not merely double the cost: a larger piece needs proportionally more shading passes, more outline corrections as the skin moves, and often an extra session because it exceeds safe daily hours. A 60 cm back piece costs several times what a 20 cm version does, not twice.
Is a much cheaper quote a bad sign?
Often yes. An hourly rate far below the local market usually means a short session, a single needle and thin lines that will blur, unlicensed work, or a portfolio made of other artists' pieces. Ask to see healed work rather than fresh photos, because fresh tattoos look sharp regardless of skill, and confirm who is actually doing the tattooing.
- Ask for healed work, ideally 1 year+ photos
- Confirm the artist doing your tattoo is the one you spoke to
- Be cautious with impulse pricing and travel tattoos
- Very cheap rates often mean thin lines and rushed sessions
