taiji tattooChinese line art
A taiji or yin-yang tattoo is the taijitu, a circle divided into two interlocking comma-shaped halves, each containing a dot of the opposite colour. It comes from Chinese philosophical and religious tradition and is usually understood as the relationship between complementary opposites rather than as a simple good-versus-evil symbol.

Size guide
Small taiji: 2–4 cm. Medium with text: 6–10 cm. Large chest or back piece: 15–25 cm.
What does a yin yang tattoo mean?
It usually expresses balance: the idea that opposites are interdependent and that neither exists alone. Because the two halves are the same shape, the symbol also works for relationships, family or a personal cycle. What it does not usually mean is good versus evil, which is a common Western misreading.
Is a yin yang tattoo religious?
It has religious roots in Taoism, Daoism and related folk practice, but in modern tattooing it is usually worn as a philosophical symbol rather than a statement of faith. The design itself is non-denominational: it does not require belief to be worn, and many people choose it for the balance idea alone.
