ink wash mountain tattooChinese line art
An ink-wash mountain tattoo borrows the shanshui composition of Chinese landscape painting, where a few peaks are suggested with soft edges and a large amount of empty space does most of the work. The design is defined by what it leaves out, which is why it suits a tall narrow placement far better than a small square one.

Size guide
Minimum: 10–15 cm vertical for any negative space to work. Ideal on forearm or calf: 18–25 cm. Full back panel: 30 cm+.
Why does an ink-wash tattoo need a large area?
Because negative space is the composition. A shanshui design with 60 percent empty paper still reads as a complete landscape, while the same design cropped into a 4 cm square reads as smudges. The empty areas need to be far enough apart for the eye to rest between them.
Will a light ink-wash tattoo fade badly?
Soft grey gradients are the most vulnerable part of any tattoo, and they lose contrast first. Ask your artist to build the design from layered grey passes rather than a single light wash, because layered passes hold more pigment. Very light, unblended washwork is the style most likely to look faded within three years.
