Xiangyun, or an auspicious cloud, is the stylized spiralling cloud form used throughout Chinese art, usually drawn as nested curves with a hooked tail. It marks the borders of heaven and is used as both a border and a standalone motif, often behind a main subject to separate it from the background.

What is a xiangyun cloud used for?
It works as a border and as a background. In traditional composition a cloud band runs along the top of a subject to separate it from the sky area above, and cloud masses sit behind the figure to give depth. It is also common as a repeating band along an arm or leg, where the hooked tails create rhythm.
How is a cloud tattoo different from a smoke tattoo?
Cloud forms are geometric and repeated, built from closed nested curves with defined tails. Smoke is irregular, open-ended and follows the movement of air. A row of clouds reads as a deliberate border, while drifting smoke reads as atmospheric, so the difference is usually visible from the shape alone.
