Japanese tattoo
A style in depth: the rules that define it, how durable it is and how to plan one.
A Japanese tattoo follows the irezumi convention: bold uniform outlines, flat colour areas, a background fill of wind bars and clouds, and compositions built around a clear subject. Because it is a style with rules rather than a matter of taste, it reads as coherent even before you notice what it depicts.

Size guide
Motif within a style: 8–15 cm. Half sleeve: 20–30 cm. Full back piece: 30–60 cm. Anything smaller fights the style.
Why do Japanese tattoos need wind bar backgrounds?
Two reasons. Practically, the wind bars fill the negative space that would otherwise be bare skin, which makes a large piece read as one composition instead of a subject floating on an empty arm. Conventionally, they are part of the style, and their absence is one of the things experienced tattooers notice first when a piece is meant to be irezumi.
How large does a Japanese tattoo need to be?
Larger than the subject alone would need. The style relies on thick outlines to stay readable at a distance, and those outlines need a minimum width that only exists on a larger placement. A Japanese dragon needs roughly 30 to 40 cm across as a back piece; the same artwork shrunk to 15 cm becomes a dark smudge with no internal structure.
Are all Japanese tattoos traditional?
No. Irezumi is the traditional form with strict conventions, but plenty of modern work borrows the palette, the subject matter and the bold outlines without following the rules. That hybrid is often called neo-traditional or Japanese-inspired. Worth asking an artist directly which they are working in, because the conventions change the design considerably.
